History of Fang Records

Founded in 1988 by Chris Rael, Fang was an early "alternative" music label, which at that time meant an alternative to corporate music.

In the early nineties, Fang was the center of a thriving new music scene in New York City. Rael produced dozens of shows Downtown at this time. The label never had any money and functioned as a co-op through which independent bands promoted themselves under an umbrella of good music. Rael's frequent trips to India and many recording projects led him away from Fang in the mid-nineties. Several bands kept the co-op alive through this period.

Today, Fang returns as a source of unique, independent music, in genres ranging from progressive rock, to world, to spoken word, to dissonant music. We never dreamed it was possible, but corporate mediocrity in the arts is even worse now than it was 14 years ago, when Fang was born. As in the past, we are rich in great music and poor in the pocketbook. Many of our CDs are homespun, with art handmade by the artists. Do your ears a favor and support this co-op!
